When I called my parents from the hospital chapel, ashes from the scene of the accident were still staining my hands.
That morning, my husband, Ethan Miller, and our children — Lily, seven, and Noah, four — died on Interstate 95 near Richmond. A truck driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, crossed the median, and struck their SUV before Ethan could avoid him.
I survived because I wasn’t with them.
This thought pierced my mind like broken glass. It still does, and I suspect it always will.
I called my father first.
“Dad,” I whispered. “There’s been an accident.”
Behind him, I could hear music, laughter, plates clattering together, and my sister Melissa talking about candles.
“What happened?” he asked in a calm, almost disinterested tone.
“Ethan is gone.” The words caught in my throat. “Lily and Noah too.”
A silence followed.
