Set up this trap just once and you’ll never have to worry about mosquitoes again!

Every 30 seconds, someone in the world dies from a mosquito bite. This small buzzing insect, which ruins your summer nights, interrupts your sleep, and leaves you covered in itchy bites, is officially the deadliest animal on Earth. Faced with this scourge, there is a natural, economical, and surprisingly effective solution that you can prepare at home with everyday ingredients.

An underestimated danger and ineffective solutions.

It’s not just a simple annoyance caused by noise or skin irritation. Mosquitoes are vectors of serious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and West Nile virus. Even in Europe, mosquito-borne diseases are steadily increasing.

However, most commercial solutions only treat the symptoms without addressing the root cause of the problem. Citronella candles emit a strong aroma but prove largely ineffective in real-world conditions. Chemical sprays contain substances that should generally be avoided near children or food. While electric mosquito repellent lamps often flash all night without actually reducing the population of biting mosquitoes.

The secret of the trap: mimicking human breathing.

How to attract all the mosquitoes in your garden and house to a trap using only products you find in your cupboards? The answer lies in carbon dioxide (CO2).

This trap works by mimicking what attracts mosquitoes most: the gas you naturally exhale when you breathe. When yeast reacts with sugar, it produces CO2. For a mosquito, this emanation is a real invitation to a meal. They follow this invisible trail directly into the container and never leave.

The Equipment Needed
To build this trap in under five minutes, gather the following items:
1 liter of hot water
1 tablespoon of dry yeast
2 tablespoons of brown sugar
1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap
A bucket or large container
A cardboard box (optional)
Manufacturing Steps
Follow these simple instructions to assemble your trap:
Prepare the base: Pour 1 liter of hot water into the bucket. Hot water helps activate the yeast more quickly and starts the fermentation process ideally.
Add the bait: Incorporate the tablespoon of dry yeast and the two tablespoons of brown sugar. Mix gently. After a few minutes, you will see bubbles forming on the surface. This indicates that CO2 is being produced and that your mosquito repellent is activated.
Capture the insects: Once fermentation is active, add the tablespoon of dish soap. Do not mix. Simply let the dish soap work on the surface. The dish soap breaks the surface tension of the water. Therefore, any mosquito that lands on the surface will sink immediately and will not be able to escape.
To assemble the device: Place the bucket inside a cardboard box in which you have previously made a side opening. This opening should be large enough to allow mosquitoes to enter, but small enough to protect the trap from gusts of wind. You can also use the bucket alone, leaving the lid slightly ajar.

Location and maintenance for optimal results
To maximize the effectiveness of your trap, position it where mosquitoes are most active: near sources of standing water, in shady corners of your garden, or in the vicinity of front doors and windows.

This device is based on simple physical and biological principles. Carbon dioxide inevitably attracts them, and the chemistry of the soap does the rest. You should notice a significant difference on the first night, with a drastic reduction in bites and night buzzing, allowing you to enjoy your evenings outdoors again.

To maintain the trap’s effectiveness, remember to renew the mixture every 3 or 4 days, as fermentation naturally slows down over time. Also, don’t hesitate to move the bucket weekly to stay one step ahead of these pests.
