After a moment, she continued.

“Grant told me he was going to file for divorce before the baby came.”

“He kept saying the timing had to be handled carefully because you were fragile.”

I laughed without humor.

“He uses that word whenever a woman’s feelings become inconvenient.”

“He said you had threatened to hurt yourself once.”

“I have never threatened that.”

Aubrey closed her eyes.

“I suspected some of it wasn’t true.”

“When?”

“By the summer.”

“Why did you stay?”

She looked down at her hands.

“Because I was pregnant.”

“That explains why you stayed after the pregnancy.”

“It does not explain how you began.”

“I loved him.”

The answer was quiet.

Not defensive.

Not dramatic.

It was also not enough.

“You loved a married man.”

“I loved the man he said he was.”

“So did I.”

The words settled between us.

The baby made a soft sound.

Aubrey adjusted the blanket.
