Naomi explained what to preserve, what I could legally access, and warned Grant might provoke me into appearing unstable. She said he was used to controlling our marriage and would come looking once I acted without permission. She was right. Grant was waiting in the hotel lobby wearing a hospital band.
He accused me of leaving without discussion, and I reminded him he had moved his pregnant mistress into our home without discussing anything. Grant claimed he called Aubrey his wife only because she was terrified, but I had watched him hold her and promise never to leave. When he called the baby “my son,” the ultrasound inside my purse felt heavy. Then he admitted the affair had lasted a little over a year.
Aubrey knew he was married, and Grant claimed our marriage was troubled. I told him it became troubled because he was sleeping with her. His plan included her clothes in my closet, my bed prepared for her recovery, and an explanation after the birth. Yet when I asked what I was supposed to be, he answered, “You’re my wife.”
When I mentioned jewelry bought from our joint account, Grant became angry that I had looked. He reached for me, then called me exhausted and unable to regulate myself when I stepped away. I handed him Naomi’s card and said all communication would go through my attorney. When he asked how I could hire a lawyer after one night, I answered, “After one year.”
I walked toward the elevators as Grant warned that his mother would never forgive me for abandoning the family. I turned back, understanding his power had depended on my silence. “I did not abandon your family,” I said. “You replaced me in it.”
